Seven C&P Exam Mistakes That Cost Veterans Ratings
Most low ratings trace back to what happened, or didn’t happen, in a short exam. These are the mistakes we see most, and how to avoid each one.
- Minimizing symptoms
- Skipping flare-ups
- Pushing through pain
- Missing the exam

The Seven Mistakes
- Saying “I’m fine.” Old habits from service. The examiner records what you say.
- Describing your best day. Ratings should reflect how you function, including bad days.
- Forgetting flare-ups. Say how often they happen, how long they last, and what you can’t do during them.
- Pushing through pain during range-of-motion tests. Stop where the pain starts and say so.
- Leaving out work and family impact. Many rating criteria are about function, not just symptoms.
- Showing up without notes. A one-page summary keeps you from forgetting key points under pressure.
- Missing the exam. Without good cause, the VA can decide on the existing record, and a claim for increase can be denied.
Where Nebraska Exams Happen
Exams may be at the Omaha VA Medical Center, a VA clinic such as Lincoln or Grand Island, a VA-contracted examiner, or by telehealth. In the Panhandle, the Black Hills VA system may be involved. If the location doesn’t work, call the scheduler early. Rescheduling beats missing it.
If the Exam Already Went Wrong
Request a copy of the exam report. Factual errors or ignored evidence can support a Higher-Level Review, and a detailed private medical opinion can be submitted with a Supplemental Claim.
C&P Exam Mistakes to Avoid: Common Questions
Is it wrong to mention pain I don’t have every day?
No. Flare-ups and bad days are part of your condition, and the examiner should consider them. Be accurate about how often they happen.
Can I bring someone with me?
Policies vary by location and exam type. Ask when you confirm the appointment. A written statement from a family member is a good alternative.
What if I get nervous and forget things?
Bring a written summary of symptoms, frequency and impact, and hand it over or refer to it during the exam.
What happens if I miss my C&P exam?
Without good cause, the VA can decide the claim on the evidence it has, and a claim for increase can be denied. Reschedule if you can’t make it.
